Fall Festival/Dress Down Day

Our Fall Festival will be held at our school tomorrow night from 6-8. There will be Scarecrow Relay Races, Dancing, Face Painting, Guess What's In The Bowl, and Trunk or Treat. Come as you are or come dressed up. We just want to see you there!!! Please no masks or weapons if you choose to dress up. I look forward to seeing you there.

Dress Down for a Cause-Friday October 22nd. Today we would like to honor all those who have fought the fight against breast cancer. Send your child to school dressed in pink and with a donation of a dollar or more. All proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

I would like to thank all of you for choosing Careers Elementary to educate your child or whole family. I am very excited about each and every student I have in my class this year. We have been together for nine weeks now. The class as a whole has grown together and has really molded into a family. We watch out for each other, take care of each other, and bother each other all at the same time!!! This blog will be updated weekly so check back often.

Family Read In

Friday Feb. 26th will be our First Family Read In. From 8-8:30 the staff at Careers Elementary would like for any parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins to come to the school and read to their child. This will take place in the child's classroom. Family Read In is the first of its kind here at our school and I hope that you all can make it a huge success!! Hands for Haiti

THANK YOU for sending in your dollars to help Haiti. Our school raised over $500 in the relief effort for Haiti. Each classroom that donated money was able to put their hand prints on fabric that will be made into a large school quilt!! If you weren't able to give please keep those in Haiti in your thoughts. Look for the REAL quilt soon!!!

Black History Program

Role Models

Role Models

Dear Lynn, Are your kids falling into the
trap of seeing professional athletes as role models? I hope you are encouraging
them to view these people as great role models for how to play the sport, while
at the same time showing them that they may not be good role models for how to
lead a responsible life. Now might be a good time to have a conversation about
role models: "I see you really like the way Tiger Woods plays the game of golf.
I bet you like the way he prepares both physically and mentally. He sets a good
example for this. Kobe Bryant is also a good role model for competitive
basketball playing. What kind of an example do you think they are setting about
how to be a great dad, a loving husband, and an honest, responsible person? Can
you think of some good role models for character? Tell me what they do that
makes them good role models. I hope that when you study people you look at their
character. If so, maybe you'll never get trapped into believing that being a
good athlete, musician, or performer automatically makes you a great person. My
wish for you is that you grow up to be somebody's model for honesty, caring, and
responsibility. If so, you won't have to face the public humiliation that Tiger
Woods and others have faced when their real character became known." Thanks for

Winter Break

Our Winter Break will begin on Monday Dec. 21. School will resume on Monday Jan. 4. December 21st is the first day of WINTER!!! Please help your child to complete their work packet. If you do 2 pages a day you will learn something everyday!!! Have a HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!!!!

Winer Musical

The Winter Musical will be held on Tuesday, December 8th. Students should be at the High School by 6pm. If you have any questions, please contact the school.

SANTA and his helper will be at the school from 5:30-6:30. He will be taking pictures with those that have paid for them. Please fill out your childs order form and return it to school. REMEMBER he will only be there BEFORE the winter musical.!!

Canned Food Drive Results

The winning class was announced today. It was Miss LeClerc's First Grade Class. I am sad that we did't win but happy that my fellow team mate did. THANK YOU for sending in well over 200 cans for just our class. I appreciate it so much.!!

Giving Feast

Will we didn't win for the most cans brought in this week. However we are the OVERALL winners. Only four more days to bring those cans in. PARENTS I challenge you to send your child to school at least one day next with THREE canned goods. Miss Brittons class is behind us by only 4 cans. WE HAVE TO BEAT THEM!!!!

Kids and Smoking

Dear Lynn,

When youngsters find themselves in tough spots, how we've handled their mistakes in the past will have a lot to do with whether they fess-up and accept our guidance or continue to remain stuck in the bad situation they've created.

Smoking is one of the many bad decisions that falls into this category. Many kids decide to experiment with this dangerous habit and quickly find themselves hooked. Since we can't follow our kids every second of the day to make sure they never light a cigarette, it's far more productive to offer concern and guidance rather than anger and threats.

With a combination of loving humor, empathy and sincerity we can plant some seeds in our child's mind: "Amy, I'm really worried that your siblings are going to get all of your inheritance."

Of course, Amy won't quite understand. "Huh?"

"Well, I'm thinking that you stand a pretty good chance of getting lung or some other sort of cancer that will wipe you out before you can get your hands on our cash. But seriously, we worry about you…because we love you. A lot of kids get hooked on cigarettes and then don't know how to stop smoking. Heck, quitting is really hard for most adults. If you decide that you want some help with this, just ask. Your mom and I really want to help."

In their book, Parenting Teens with Love and Logic Jim Fay and Foster Cline, MD, give a variety of additional strategies for upping the odds that teens will want to behave and lead healthy lives. All of these techniques involve showing great love and concern, setting limits only over what's within our control, and providing guidance rather than hollow threats and lectures.

Don't Spoil Them Rotten!
Tips for Raising Kids Who Love You More Than Your Money

Dear Lynn,

Throughout my new book, Parenting Kids To Become the People Employers Really Want and America Desperately Needs!, I provide a variety of tips for helping kids become responsible adults who succeed in the competitive workforce of tomorrow. Here are just a few examples:

Remember that struggle builds self-esteem.
Requiring our kids to earn some of the things they want is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.

Set limits by saying "yes" instead of "no."
Saying, "Yes, you may have those sneakers if you pay for half of them" is far more effective than, "I am not buying those for you! Do you think that money grows on trees?"

Show them that arguing and manipulation don't work.
Experiment with calmly repeating, "I love you too much to argue" regardless of what they say. They'll be madder in the short-term yet happier in the long-term.

Expect them to do chores without being paid.
Experiment with saying, "I'll be happy to ______________ when your chores are done."

Let them see you say "no" to yourself.
When our kids see us resisting the urge to buy everything we want, they are far more likely to develop humility and responsibility.

After learning about Love and Logic, one couple commented, "When we were kids, nobody in our community had designer clothes, sports cars, or cell phones. It was a lot easier to be a kid and to be a parent. Your book gave us the courage to do what we already knew was right. Now our kids have the most old-fashioned parents on the block!"

I submitted a project to donorschose.org and my project has been fully funded!! I asked for lot so of books on tape to build my listening center library. By listening to books on tape, children can locate words on the page and learn how to read fluently. Thank to my donors for making the lives of these smiling faces better. Monday was the first day of the canned food drive. Our class has already collected 24 non-perishable food items. If we bring in the most canned goods, our class will earn a special party!! I hope my friends and family will send in canned goods.

Benchmark Testing

At the beginning and end of month, the students take a benchmark test. At this time the test is read to the students and they must answer the questions on their own. After the test graded and scores and turned into percents, I can see what I need to be teaching my kids for the month. This month we are focusing on root words and writing repsonses to a passage.

Eckerts Pumpkin Patch

On Thursday, October 29th, first grade went our first field trip. We took a short 30 minute bus ride over to Millstadt, IL. Of course the bus got lost on the back country roads!! The day started out pretty. Once we got on the tractor to get our pumpkins, it started to RAIN!! The children LOVED being in the rain and picking their own pumpkins. The adults not so much. We were cold and ready to go home. The field trip ended short. When we returned back to school, the students reflected on the trip. It was great to see all the happy, smiley faces when they left the school with their pumpkins.
